The e-ROSA project seeks to build a shared vision of a future sustainable e-infrastructure for research and education in agriculture in order to promote Open Science in this field and as such contribute to addressing related societal challenges. In order to achieve this goal, e-ROSA’s first objective is to bring together the relevant scientific communities and stakeholders and engage them in the process of coelaboration of an ambitious, practical roadmap that provides the basis for the design and implementation of such an e-infrastructure in the years to come.

This paper presents an overview on application development of Internet of Things (IOT) in agriculture in China. The demands for the agricultural applications of IOT are investigated and analyzed first. Then the agricultural applications of IOT are studied, current status and related requirements are discussed. Key technologies of IOT are discussed in terms of agricultural applications. The problems present and proposals for the next few years are given for the development of agricultural applications. Applications of IOT in agriculture are generally reflected at various stages of the agricultural production. Most of these applications are still at the stage of trial and demonstration in China. For the practical social and economic status in the rural area of China, the service model of IOT in agriculture is still amorphous, and the service platform has not been established yet. The IOT in agriculture shall serve the agricultural demands, and provide the problem-oriented solutions aiming at the specific implementation scenarios. The growth of IOT will accelerate the transition from the conventional agriculture to the modern agriculture, and provide great business opportunities for the new emerging technologies and industries.
